One-third of American children are covered by Medicaid or the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP)
April 01, 2012
SOURCE: Medicaid and CHIP Payment and Access Commission, June 2012 MACStats. "Other payers" includes children covered by Medicare, military health plans, and other government programs. Compiled by PGPF.
The government plays an important role in providing health coverage for children. Medicaid provides health benefits to low-income families and the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) extends Medicaid benefits to children in lower-income families that make too much money to qualify for traditional Medicaid. Approximately one-third of the nation’s 79 million children 18 and under are covered under these two programs.
