The government plays an important role in providing health coverage for children. Medicaid provides health benefits to low-income families and the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) extends Medicaid benefits to children in lower-income families that make too much money to qualify for traditional Medicaid. Approximately one-third of the nation’s 79 million children 18 and under are covered under these two programs.
