Medicare and Medicaid finance more than half of total nursing home care costs — and the share is increasing

Together, Medicare and Medicaid finance about half of all nursing home care. That share is projected to increase to about 60 percent within the decade. Private insurance accounts for only about 18 percent of payments for nursing home care, and out-of-pocket expenses account for about 27 percent.
