Peter G. Peterson Foundation Projects
April 23, 2013
The Peter G. Peterson Foundation's mission is to increase public awareness of the nature and urgency of key economic challenges threatening America's future. The Foundation supports innovative projects, both through grants and special initiatives that partner the Foundation with selected organizations.
Coalition for Fiscal and National Security
Convened by the Peter G. Peterson Foundation, the Coalition for Fiscal and National Security is led by a group of distinguished defense, economic, and foreign policy leaders calling for sound fiscal and defense policies to reflect the realities of the 21st century. Framing the national debt as a national security imperative, the Coalition advocates changes to discretionary spending — including defense — and entitlements in order to put the U.S. on a fiscally sustainable path.
Fiscal Confidence Index
The Fiscal Confidence Index is a national survey that measures public opinion about the national debt. It is modeled after the Consumer Confidence Index and is designed to help policymakers, members of the media, and other interested parties gauge public opinion on the national debt, and provide the public with an instrument to communicate their concerns or optimism to elected officials.
The Fiscal Summit is the premier annual gathering dedicated to advancing solutions to America's long-term fiscal challenges, and the Peter G. Peterson Foundation's signature event. The Summit convenes the nation's most influential elected leaders, fiscal policy experts, and thought leaders to analyze the trends shaping the country, and how they directly impact our ability to invest, compete, and generate opportunity for all Americans.
Fiscal Thursdays at 2012 National Conventions
To foster greater discussion on the nation's long-term fiscal challenges during the 2012 election campaign season, the Peter G. Peterson Foundation, in partnership with Bloomberg LP, sponsored "Fiscal Thursdays" at both the Republican and Democratic National Conventions. The events brought together policy experts and political, business, and civic leaders to discuss the implications of America's fiscal challenges for the economy and the presidential election.
I'm Ready! Video Project
The I'm Ready! video project is designed to increase public awareness about America's national debt and accelerating action on finding a solution for it. User-generated video clips, which can be created through the I'm Ready! website, give everyday people the chance to make their voices heard on the topic.
InDebtEd (short for "in-debt education") is a joint campaign by PGPF and MTV's campus network, mtvU, to alert college students to the personal and governmental dangers of financial irresponsibility. The program encourages students to take action to secure their futures. The campaign's aim is to empower young people to protect themselves financially and to work together to advocate government fiscal responsibility in order to change the course of the nation's future.
When PGPF's leadership began laying plans for the Foundation's first year, a unique opportunity emerged. Acclaimed filmmaker Patrick Creadon (Wordplay) had begun production on a documentary about the nation's looming fiscal crisis, and the film prominently featured Dave Walker and The Concord Coalition's bipartisan citizen engagement road show called the Fiscal Wake-Up Tour.
OweNo is a national public awareness campaign whose mission is to educate Americans about the causes and consequences of the projected growth in federal debt levels and engage them in a national movement to address these important fiscal challenges.
POLITICO Breakfast Briefings
The Peter G. Peterson Foundation joins with POLITICO to present Morning Money Breakfast Briefings, an interview series hosted by POLITICO's Chief Economic Correspondent, Ben White. The briefings feature fiscal informed commentary and discussion that will reinforce the connections between the nation’s long-term challenges and the most pressing economic policy issues of the day.
Post-Election: The Fiscal Cliff and Beyond
The 2012 "Fiscal Cliff" presented a critical opportunity for Washington policymakers to devise a comprehensive, bipartisan plan for dealing with America's long-term structural debt. The Peter G. Peterson Foundation convened this event, featuring top leaders and policy experts, to get answers and urge action. Five think tanks participating in Solutions Initiative II presented their federal budget plans as part of the proceedings.
State Fiscal Leaders
The Peter G. Peterson Foundation highlights efforts by elected officials outside of Washington to solve structural deficit problems. While most discussions on America's fiscal policy focus on the federal level, state governments also face daunting budget challenges that have potentially major socio-economic impact.
Up to Us
Up to Us is a nationwide campus competition sponsored and managed by the Peter G. Peterson Foundation, the Clinton Global Initiative University, and Net Impact. It provides an opportunity for college students to build a movement to raise awareness and engagement on America's long-term fiscal and economic challenges. Student teams selected from across the United States design and run thought-provoking, fun and impactful campaigns around the effects of rising debt, particularly on economic opportunity and investment in the future.
