With a $3 million grant from the Foundation, the Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI) is establishing the World Institute for Nuclear Security (WINS), a new international organization to help nuclear security practitioners implement more effective and efficient security programs for nuclear materials in use, storage, and transit. WINS will be developed with the goal of implementing new international measures to secure highly enriched plutonium and uranium and to contain related nuclear terrorism threats. This program will complement and supplement the efforts of IAEA, its member states and other global initiatives, and will seek to create a first line of accountability with facility operators.
WINS will serve as the coordinating and facilitating body for the sharing of information about nuclear material security best practices and will serve the common nuclear security needs of its members from the nuclear community. The overarching goal is to ensure nuclear security at all facilities through the appropriate exchange of best practices and lessons learned by the operators of those facilities, on a voluntary basis.
The Nuclear Threat Initiative is a nonprofit organization working to reduce the global threats from nuclear, biological and chemical weapons. Nonpartisan and non-ideological, NTI is a place where people with different views from all parts of the world work together to develop and implement a carefully thought out, well-organized global response to dangers that affect all of humanity. Its activities are conducted so as to be fully transparent to the U.S. and other governments.
The Nuclear Threat Initiative was established in 1970 under the charter of the National Academy of Sciences to serve as advisor to the nation to improve health by providing independent, objective, evidence-based advice to policymakers, health professionals, the private sector, and the public.
