"Sixteen years after he shook up American politics by launching an impromptu campaign for president, Ross Perot is about to dip a toe back into the public debates. And, yes, he's bringing his charts with him..." So wrote the Washington Post's David Broder in hailing the launch of www.perotcharts.com. Based on work by our own Dave Walker when he was US Comptroller General, among others, Perot and his team have produced 35 easily accessible charts and a simple accompanying narration that together paint a tough but realistic picture of the nation's long-term fiscal outlook if corrective measures are not taken.
Back in 1992, his message and, as importantly, his charts helped Perot win nearly 20% of the popular vote for president. "It may well have been the first and only time that the abstraction of an out-of-kilter budget was communicated outside the boardroom or the economics classroom," Broder wrote. "People got it." Although Perot himself is not offering any specific solutions on this website, the Peterson Foundation will pick up where this great effort leaves off and will actively seek solutions to these looming fiscal problems that transcend age, party lines and ideological divides.
