It has come to my attention that the federal government is in a $56.4 trillion financial hole that grows by $2 trillion to $3 trillion every year for lack of action by Washington politicians. That amounts to a burden of $184,000 on every American citizen.

Rising health care costs are outpacing overall economic and income growth and, absent dramatic and fundamental reforms, eventually could bankrupt the country. Based on our current entitlement and other spending, taxes would have to more than double over the next few decades in order for the government to pay its bills and deliver on its promises.

When introducing new policy proposals, our elected officials have learned to anticipate the inevitable question: "How do you plan to pay for it?" But oftentimes, after being provided with some basic explanation, the reporters chasing after the candidates don't have the information at hand to take the exchange to the next level.

I encourage your staff, and all Americans, to read "The State of the Union's Finances," a new primer published by the nonpartisan Peter G. Peterson Foundation at www.pgpf.org.  Then, please start asking our elected officials about their proposed approaches for balancing the budget over time, addressing long-term growth in major entitlements like Social Security and Medicare, and reforming our tax system.

It's time for America to stop digging itself into a financial hole.  Please have your publication devote more attention to our country's long-term economic challenges.
