Write The Washington Post
In February 23's Washington Post, Robert Kuttner declared that President Obama's Fiscal Responsibility Summit is a failure. He also made false accusations about the Peterson Foundation supporting cuts in entitlements. Please take a moment to write a letter to the editors of The Washington Post and set the record straight — there is no attack on entitlements. We want entitlements to be solvent, secure, and sustainable, and we've never advocated otherwise. The president and congressional leaders should be commended for organizing the Fiscal Responsibility Summit, aiming to reduce the deficit and for looking out for our nation's long-term finances.
Your letter should be individually written, short, and to the point — usually no more than 200 words.
Please use one or two of the talking points below to help shape your letter.
- The official national debt is approaching $11 trillion. But what the Peter G. Peterson Foundation calls the real national debt, including current explicit liabilities and unfunded promises for entitlement programs, is $56 trillion.
- The figure of $56 trillion is based on the official consolidated financial statements of the US government provided by the U.S. Treasury.
- The Peterson Foundation believes that Social Security and Medicare need to be strengthened and has never advocated for these programs to be "perversely cut"
- President Obama's bipartisan Fiscal Responsibility Summit reaches across the aisle to engage both Republicans and Democrats in finding long-term fixes for our federal burden.
- It's time to let go of the partisan stereotypes and failed policies of the past, and work together to find a solution for our ever-increasing fiscal crisis.
