Dr. Eugene Steuerle to Join Peter G. Peterson Foundation as Vice President

May 18, 2008

NEW YORK, May 19, 2008 - The Peter G. Peterson Foundation today announced the appointment of Dr. Eugene Steuerle as Vice President. A noted expert on the interplay of the federal budget, taxes, retirement security, health, philanthropy, and other areas of public finance, Dr. Steuerle will lead the Foundation's research and analysis on key fiscal and other selected challenges the Foundation will address.

Dr. Steuerle joins the Foundation from the Urban Institute, where he was a senior fellow and co-director of the Tax Policy Center, a joint effort of the Urban Institute and Brookings Institution. The author, co-author, or editor of 15 books and hundreds of articles and Congressional testimonies, and a prolific columnist who has written for Tax Notes and the Financial Times, he will continue to write regularly in his new role.

"Gene is uniquely well-equipped to help us explain and address these challenges that have hung over the economy for years," said Pete Peterson, founder and chairman of the board of the Peter G. Peterson Foundation. "These aren't just economic issues - they are moral issues that must be resolved sooner rather than later in order to secure the futures of our children and grandchildren."

"We are delighted that Gene is bringing his considerable professional experience and abilities to help us tackle the critical issues facing our nation," said David M. Walker, the Foundation's president and CEO. "Success will require developing sensible solutions that can be supported on a bi-partisan basis. Gene's record of creativity and his non-partisan, non-ideological approach to issues will be a major asset to the Foundation."

Steuerle himself said, "The Peterson Foundation is addressing some of the nation's most urgent problems - problems that often arise when government sits by passively despite unfavorable long-term consequences. I'm honored to join the Foundation's unprecedented effort to work with citizens and other institutions to restore our democracy's ability to confront our choices honestly and fairly, with primary consideration for the well-being of future generations."

Dr. Steuerle also has served as President of the National Tax Association (2001-2002), Chair of the 1999 Technical Panel advising Social Security on its methods and assumptions, and Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for tax analysis (1987-1989). From 1984 to 1986, he served as the economic coordinator and original organizer of the Treasury Department's tax reform effort, which a top Treasury official noted "would not have moved forward without [his] early leadership."

Dr. Steuerle serves or has served on advisory panels or boards for the Congressional Budget Office, the Government Accountability Office, the Joint Committee on Taxation, the National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics, the Partnership for America's Economic Success, and Independent Sector, the leadership forum for non-profit organizations. He also helped start the Alexandria Community Trust, a Virginia foundation affiliated with the Community Foundation of the National Capital Region.

He has a doctorate in economics, with a distinction in public finance, from the University of Wisconsin at Madison.
