In 2008, the Foundation invested in The Concord Coalition’s highly acclaimed Fiscal Wake-Up Tour, a non-partisan effort to inform and engage citizens about the urgent need for changes to America's fiscal policies. The Tour’s town hall meetings took place in more than 40 cities across the country and increased the public’s awareness of the United States’ daunting challenges. These public forums are featured in the critically acclaimed documentary IOUSA.
The Foundation currently funds The Concord Coalition’s Fiscal Solutions Tour as well, which has established dialogue on potential measures to address America’s fiscal problems. In cities across the nation, top policy experts and citizens are discussing options for defense and domestic spending cuts, Social Security and Medicare reforms, improvements in the health care system, better and fairer tax policies, and tougher budget controls in Congress.
Speaking on the Fiscal Solutions Tour are Robert L. Bixby, executive director of The Concord Coalition; David M. Walker, CEO of the Comeback America Initiative and former U.S. Comptroller General; Douglas Holtz-Eakin, president of The American Action Forum and former director of the Congressional Budget Office; Bill Novelli, professor at Georgetown University, and former CEO of AARP; and Isabel Sawhill, senior fellow at the Brookings Institution and former associate director of the Office of Management and Budget.
These events also serve as forums for creating Fiscal Stewardship Committees, citizen action efforts that engage local businesses and residents to help build popular support for sound fiscal policies.
