Position Summary

The primary role of the Senior Director, Tax Policy, is to track, research, analyze and assess the impacts of current, proposed and potential federal tax and revenue policies in order to advance policy goals for the Foundation. In doing so, the Senior Director will engage with a range of research organizations from across the ideological spectrum to initiate new ideas, refine existing ones, and promote the combination of those most likely to address America’s long-term fiscal challenges. This leader will be expected to coordinate closely with colleagues in the Peterson Center on Healthcare and the communications team within the Foundation.

The incumbent will have significant knowledge of the legislative and policy-making process, and expertise in federal revenue and tax policies. The position reports to the Senior Advisor of the Foundation. It requires a significant presence in Washington, DC with occasional travel to New York City.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop, maintain, and communicate knowledge of federal tax and revenue policies.
  • Collaborate with Senior Advisor, staff and senior leadership across the organization to identify and execute research opportunities that help advance the Foundation’s goals.
  • Commission research by think tanks and academic institutions through grants and via contract when necessary with consultancies.
  • Prepare quick analysis of federal tax policies, legislation and proposals that the Foundation can use in public-facing materials, media statements, and fact sheets that advance the organization’s goals and objectives.
  • Research and write reports, blog posts, and op-eds on federal tax issues.
  • Expand the Foundation’s profile with policymakers, think tanks, academics, the media, and interested stakeholders through presentations, briefings, research reports, and other communications.
  • Keep informed of projects and tax-related policy research of peer organizations and present opportunities for collaboration and amplification of shared work.
  • Understand and adhere to legal requirements associated with the Foundation and its affiliated organizations.

About the Successful Candidate

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; a Master’s degree in law or public policy preferred.
  • Significant experience in economics, public finance, or public policy.
  • Demonstrated expertise in federal fiscal policy and tax policy and legislation.
  • In-depth knowledge of legislative and policy-making process.
  • Deep network of experts in tax and fiscal policy.
  • Demonstrated skills in collaborating across complex organizations.
  • Excellent written and oral communication and analytical skills.
  • Salary and Benefits

    We anticipate that the starting base salary range for the Senior Director position will be $210,000–$215,000, plus eligibility for an annual discretionary bonus. In addition, we offer a generous benefits package designed to support employee health and well-being, including comprehensive health insurance, a substantial 401k match, paid time off, a hybrid work schedule and other flexible work policies.
